There was yet another opportunity for our clients to take part in a free medical check-up. The DePaul Hope Social Centre organized this free medical check-up in collaboration with the wife of Enugu State Governor, Mrs. Ugwuanyi. The clients were led to the old government lodge, venue of the check-up by Lady Felicia Nwodo, our seminar coordinator. They arrived the venue on a hired hummer bus on the 8th of June, 2017, at about 12 noon.
Our clients met the nurses, who were already waiting for our arrival. They were warmly welcomed by the cheerful nurses and shortly, a team of 6 doctors came out and one of the doctors gave them a short lecture on cervical cancer. According to the doctor, more than 90 percent of women have this virus accumulated in their bodies over time. Some have strong antibodies that can fight the virus, whilst others do not. Hence, this long time accumulation of the virus can develop to cancer on that part of the body. However, early detection of this virus with little treatment stops it from further development. Hence, the test is a sort of immunization to that. Several tests on cervical cancer were conducted for all the 22 women in attendance. Available drugs were administered to our clients according to the type of infections that such individuals had. Some others had medications prescribed for them and asked to purchase specific medications at pharmacies outside the lodge.
Another doctor conducted malaria –typhoid tests and some of our clients were given further appointment with the doctors ranging from 3 weeks, 3 months, one year and 3 years. At the end of the medical check- up, seventeen widows and five none widows attended the medical- check up. The clients expressed happiness to the governor’s wife and DePaul Hope Social Centre for organizing the medical check-up. The governor’s wife representative informed us that, if our organization would make medications available, they would come to our office for a more detailed check-up.
This would mean wider publicity would be created and more participants expected as there were many of our clients that wanted to come, but the bus couldn’t accommodate them. DePaul Hope Social Centre would like to partner with companies and organizations that would make free medications available for these women.
